Thinking Skills For Teachers

What’s it about...?

‘Thinking Skills’ training focuses on the explicit teaching of thinking skills across all subjects and Year Groups. Unlike other courses and programmes on thinking skills, the training clarifies the meaning of each skill and explains how /when to use the skills in lessons. The six skills are: 1.Association 2.Interrogation 3.Hypothesis 4.Categorisation 5.Visualising 6.Hierarchy

How does it help...?

The aim of the training is to give teachers and students a ‘thinking-skills set’ for lessons which, when used regularly, clearly shows students ‘HOW’ to learn. This increased awareness of ‘HOW’ to learn in every aspect of lessons significantly improves teacher-student relationships, teacher-student motivation and, ultimately, improved exam results.

Who is it for...?

Teachers from all subject areas who are interested in improving their students’ thinking skills. Heads of Department who would like to establish thinking skills throughout their subject-area. Learning-to-Learn/PLTS co-ordinators who would like a ready-made thinking-skills programme that can be immediately implemented across the curriculum.

Thinking Skills For Students

What’s it about...?

‘Thinking Skills’ training focuses on giving students a set of thinking skills which they can use across all subjects to become more independent learners. The training is supported by online software which clearly explains each skill and shows how/when to use the skills in lessons. The six skills are: 1.Association 2.Interrogation 3.Hypothesis 4.Categorisation 5.Visualising 6.Hierarchy

How does it help...?

The training helps to develop students’ problem-solving skills, showing them that learning can be learnt, and that intelligence is a skill that can be developed with the right skills at hand. The training also helps to make students more independent, resilient learners.

Who is it for...?

Students from Years 7-13 who have underdeveloped problem-solving skills. Students who struggle to complete tasks on their own, often highlighted in homework rarely being completed. Students who regularly say: “I don’t get it.” Students who underperform in exams.

Advanced Thinking Skills For A-Level

What’s it about...?

‘Advanced Thinking Skills Training for A-level’ focuses on high-order thinking skills which are embedded into A-level courses. By regularly teaching these skills across A-level subjects, teachers and students will have a greater awareness of the skills being tested and, therefore, a greater ability to problem-solve and achieve at A-level. The six skills are: 1.Criteria 2.Alternatives 3.Patterns 4.Analogy 5.Synthesis 6.The 5 Thinking Steps.

How does it help...?

The training particularly helps in giving teachers, students and leaders a ‘common thinking framework’ to use in lessons and for curriculum planning. Schools often consider each subject to be unique in terms of the skills being tested. In fact, although the content of each subject is unique, the skills are the same.

Who is it for...?

A-level teachers across all subjects interested in having an ‘A-level skills-set’ for their students . Learning-to-Learn/PLTS co-ordinators who are looking for a cross-curricular tool for A-level independent learning.
